LONG WEEKENDS

Over the past two weeks or so, I’ve been immersing myself in every bit of music that is being passed my way. If you’re up to date with my life, you know that it’s changed a lot recently. Music has been a major source of comfort and reflection, and it’s helped me to continue to find daily happiness. It didn’t make sense to me to listen to the same music I would have a month or two ago. I’ve really been working on expanding myself as a person, having new conversations, which inevitably meant checking out new music. During this process, I’ve realized that I have also been neglecting far too much music that I used to listen to years ago. It’s as if the past two years have been narrowly focused on a select few musicians. I don’t necessarily regret it, but I feel as if I’m not living up to my full potential as a music fanatic.
It’s funny how you can make these realizations when you least expect it. Tyler, someone I’ve met recently, is about as open minded as you can be when it comes to music. Tyler and I have something very particular in common. We both make random mixed playlists made up of all different styles of music. When I met him, he already had a recent list going and I loved it so much that I offered to make burn him a CD of it. I couldn’t resist making a copy for myself, and it’s been an easy go-to on my long morning commutes. It had me thinking that this mixtape needed to be shared with even more people. It puts me in such a good mood!
As per the usual mixtape post, I’ll break down a few of my favorite songs from the list. Some of these I know very well, and some are new ones that I was introduced to. If you ask me, that’s the perfect combination for a mixed CD.

TIME OF THE SEASON

A classic, this song came out in the late 60’s and is one of those insightful slow jams. I love the thumpy baseline, and pair that with the psychedelic keyboards and you’ve got yourself a groovy, timeless hit. Gotta listen to this one all the way through, because the keyboard solo at the end is just fantastic.

MOTHER'S LITTLE HELPER

I’ve always liked the Stones, but I feel like this is one of the songs my parents always skipped over when we were in the car as kids because I had never heard it. The lyrics are sort of dark, and delve into drug abuse. Upbeat rhythms in the song reflect how some people hide addiction with a smile.

AROUND THE BEND

This is another new one for me, and it had me hooked the second I heard that groovy saxophone riff. This Danish band is talented in fusing styles, and this song is full of pop, funk, electronic and rock (apparently this combo is something called Acid Jazz). It’s one of those hits you can’t help but sing along to, just see for yourself.

EX'S & OH'S

This song is so dang catchy. I love Elle King’s voice. It’s almost as if she came straight out of the 50’s with her jazzy, raspy tone. The lyrics are fun, and I especially love the bridge. And man, that tambourine just pulls it all together. If you haven’t heard this on the radio yet (and trust me, you will), do yourself a favor and check it out.

FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH

This song is an old favorite, but it has a comfortable place on this playlist. I love the combination of acoustic and electric guitar. Also, the lyrics are pretty powerful if you really listen to them. This is one of those instantly recognizable classic rock songs, and it has this soothing quality to it.

KARMA POLICE

When it comes to Radiohead, I haven’t explored a whole lot of their music. This song has a soft lullaby feel to it, and I keep coming back to it. Theres a steady buildup, and the song just gets heavier as it goes on. Plus, the piano adds such a unique element to rock music and this song, in particular.
So, if you’re looking for a new combination of music to listen to, definitely check out this mixtape. Because of all of the new things I’m listening to, I have a lot of upcoming mixtape posts coming up! Aside from that, my the music section of my blog will be expanding as well. I’ve had my eyes on a number of shows and concerts coming to town, so there may be enough to make a new subsection of my blog. Tyler and I are going to the Modest Mouse concert next month and I’m beyond excited. Check back for a post on it! Until then, I’ll be getting my daily dose of musical medicine. It’s amazing how different combinations of sounds and words can help heal the soul.
