I am lucky to be surrounded by people who give great advice. Communicating with others brings out my creativity, and I enjoy hearing everyone’s nuggets of wisdom. During one of our chats, my boss at my internship pointed out the importance of perseverance when it comes to public relations. She said our industry demands it, and that resonated with me.
Communication is a tough field to go into, and it takes a lot of instinct. There are going to be plenty of times where your pitch letter is going to be ignored, a campaign tactic will backfire or something won’t go according to plan and you will have to roll with the punches. What sets great people apart is that they persevere, rework a problem, find a solution and don’t succumb to frustration. It is so important to have a positive outlook and inspire yourself to get the job done. It all begins with optimism. This advice really helped me realize that work ethic is more important than qualifications. I’d rather prove myself through my actions than my resume.

I wanted to find a quote on perseverance, and I came across one of my all-time favorites. If you don't already know, I love pop culture, which of course includes Star Wars. I regard it as one of the greatest movie series of all time, and this quote came from Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Luke travels back to Dagobah to finish his Jedi Knight training where Yoda says to him, “Do or do not. There is no try.” You can either choose to persevere, or you can fail. I love this quote, and now I have a new outlook on why it is so powerful. |
